| MANDATE FOR PEACE The people have spoken out through the 2006 mid-term election. We have repudiated war policies and issued a mandate for new policies that promote peace and international cooperation. I/we insist that the newly elected Congress, in its earliest days in office, pass legislation requiring the prompt removal of all US troops from Iraq and discontinue funding for military purposes in Iraq except for the safe withdrawal of all U.S. forces. In addition, funds should be allocated for the reconstruction of Iraq. More information about the NJ Coalition to Bring the Troops Home NOW: This is a New Jersey organization of 17 peace groups. The billboard is one of 16 in our four-County (Bergen, Essex, Morris, and Union) effort to have road and highway billboards to end what organizers call the “illegal and immoral war” that has claimed the lives of more than 2,601 American troops, has seen 20,000 seriously wounded, and has cost uncounted hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives. The first billboard sponsored by the NJ Coalition to Bring the Troops Home NOW appeared for 50 days near Penn Station in Newark. The group’s statement says: “We must not allow any more brave Americans to sacrifice themselves in a war that should never have been fought, a war that is not in the interests of the people of the United States or the people of Iraq.” “Empty talk of ‘staying the course’ is a betrayal of our responsibility to the troops, to our country, and to the people of Iraq,” The group does not want any U.S. troops or bases to remain in Iraq, and opposes the continuation of an air war. “No U.S. oil companies should dominate the Iraqi economy and its resources.” The coalition has a website, www.BringTroopsHomeNJ.org, with information on the groups involved, the full text of their policy statement, and plans for future actions and demonstrations.
